Portland is definitely one of the foodie capitals. Yes, say what you want about the show Portlandia (which I do have to say is an exaggerated truth but maybe more truth than exaggeration). If you’ve ever seen the show there’s an episode where the main characters sit down at a restaurant and ask about the life of the chicken they want to order. Basically, Portland restaurants love to showcase their local and sustainable foods, including the farm animals’ diet. So the menus are always changing, depending on the season and what’s available.

Here are two restaurants that I had the pleasure of not eating in on my plate:

I have a confession to make.

This weekend has not been a very good “Eating In” week/weekend. I have failed in this arena. (But then again I feel like that’s almost every weekend – anybody agree with me on this one?) Anyway, here is the first part of my ‘Not Eating In’ series, showcasing my eats from my dining out streak.

1. Healthy Steps Healthy U

At my company all employees have the opportunity to take part in a benefits wellness program called Healthy Steps. I just started my job this past September but I didn’t join the program until the beginning of January. Essentially if you part take in any physical activity – this includes work outs, riding your bike to work or any organized race or event – you have the opportunity to earn points. Once an employee reaches up to 1200 points they will receive $200 benefits dollars to their paycheck at the end of the year. Pretty awesome deal, no?!

For the past 2 months I have gained a new respect for those who are forced to be limited with their food choices.

Let me start from the beginning. In mid-January I had an unexpected trip to the ER for abdominal pain. Over $450 later I was told that it was gastritis. My stomach was inflamed. I was sent home with some acid reducing medication, pain killers, and told to eat bland foods.

Now it’s almost 2 months later and I’m still living with this awful thing called heartburn. So as my own dietitian I try (or in this case, I tried) to stay away from everything that may flare it up. Acidic, spicy, fatty, fried, greasy food. Chocolate. Alcohol. Coffee. I avoided it all. (Maybe with a couple of exceptions.)

(Here’s a handout on preventing heartburn with diet. Click here.)

So what was I supposed to eat?

For awhile I was eating Ritz crackers, bananas, and peanut butter and jelly on white toast. Bland, bland and some more bland.

I hate to be cliché and say that one of my new years resolutions is about eating healthier. So I won’t.

Instead I will concentrate less on trying to keep a resolution and more on changing my behavior for the sake of a healthier life.

Now that is quite the internal debate that’s going on.

Since giving up meat, poultry and fish a few months ago I have decided that I wanted to bring fish back onto my plate.

For the last few weeks I have made some attempts. I’m not quite sure whether this will be a permanent decision.

My first bite of fish was a lovely backed salmon that was delicious. No problems with devouring that.

The second attempt was not as delectable. In fact it was the complete opposite. From beginning to end.

Sushi. Oh, how I missed thee… until I walked into the sushi restaurant. The odor of raw fish was no delightful aroma. Instead, I felt like I had just walked into a fish market.
